New disc golf course in Springfield makes growing sport accessible to nearly everyone

If you can throw a Frisbee and have a basic understanding of the rules of golf, you can play disc golf.

It’s an increasingly popular sport, particularly among young people, and it has one distinct advantage over traditional clubs-and-balls golf: It doesn’t cost anything to play.

The game itself is pretty simple. Players throw special discs (by the way, don’t call it “Frisbee golf” unless you want the serious players to make fun of you) at baskets placed strategically around the course. Shoot for par, count your throws, lowest score wins.

Now, with a new course open in Springfield, Jacksonvillians have an opportunity to play pretty much any time they feel like it. There are also courses at Hanna Park, in Arlington, in Clay County and at the St. Johns County Fairgrounds.

Jacksonville Beach ranked nation’s most popular beach

Jacksonville Beach is the nation’s most popular beach, according to The Daily Beast website.

The site, a popular national news and entertainment Internet site, Monday ranked the top 20 beaches nationwide, from California to Hawaii and along the east and west coasts, and Jacksonville Beach was listed No. 1 for 2010. Jacksonville Beach outranked the traditionally popular Florida beaches such as Miami, Daytona Beach and Clearwater, ranked 3, 14 and 15 respectively.

“The ranking is fabulous,” Jacksonville Beach Mayor Fland Sharp said Tuesday. “That’s just wonderful news that people appreciate Jacksonville Beach as much as they do.”

Home sellers probably won’t be too happy, but housing experts in an article at CNNMoney say that underpricing a home by 10 percent may help it sell faster. And while sellers may lose out on thousands from the sale, they likely will avoid months of carrying costs from the home lingering on the market to offset that loss.

The high inventory of foreclosures on the market is making it difficult for sellers to compete against these ultra-low prices. Therefore, “listing your home for less than comparable ones in your neighborhood is the best way of unloading it as quickly as possible,” according to the article.

You could even attract a bidding war, says Steve Murray, editor of the Real Trends newsletter.

Furthermore, it may take the property a lot less time to sell. For example, a home underpriced by 10 percent in Somerdale, N.J., may sell in a few days rather than in the average four months, says Denise Riordan, a Sotheby’s International real estate professional.
