There is no question that artwork can make a home look great. But it can also look wrong, and I mean seriously wrong.
There are so many opportunities today to obtain art and photographs: online stores, Home Goods, consignment shops that the options are limitless. (Even better, take a class at Jacksonville Redi Arts store in San Marco and create your own masterpieces.) However, if you want your artwork to look great, it’s important to follow a few simple rules:
Hang pictures at the right height
I cannot stress this enough. Do not hang artwork too high. It makes the space look awkward and not visually grounded. The center of a picture should be 57” – 60” off the floor. There are some exceptions, like artwork over fireplaces and large furniture, but 57” is considered a comfortable viewing height for the average person.
Too big is better than too small
If you look at model homes, you’ll notice the trend towards large and dramatic artwork. (Picture of model home) You can accomplish the same with either extra large artwork (HomeGoods usually has a great selection) or by grouping pictures together. I personally don’t like to hang more than 2 or 3 pieces because it gets too complicated, and I’m blonde. Feel free to hang more as long as it doesn’t overwhelm the space. Here is a good YouTube video that shows how to do it.
Make it easy
My favorite pictures hooks are the Floreat brand. (Ooks look similar but I haven’t tried them yet.) I love the Floreats because they can hold heavy pictures and mirrors and they leave a barely visible hole. If you make a mistake, you won’t end of up with huge craters that need to be filled and the wall repainted. I use these for staging for that very reason.
When done right, artwork makes an average house look fabulous. Take advantage of that, especially when you get ready to sell your home.
